OHIO鈥檚 College of Fine Arts continues summer programs for teens and youth through virtual workshops

OHIO鈥檚 College of Fine Arts is finding a way for students to have a creative outlet this summer by offering virtual summer programs in every area of the college. Students will have the opportunity to learn new materials and techniques with experienced faculty and visiting artists, as well as collaborate with students across the country in virtual performances.

The program offers pre-college programs for high school students, such as the  天美传媒Summer Music Academy, the Summer Dance Institute , and Summer Studios in Art + Design, Film, and Theater.

鈥淲e're excited about what can be done across all our fine arts disciplines,鈥 said Kate Hampel, director of the College鈥檚 Summer Arts Programs and assistant professor of Instruction, Foundations and Sculpture + Expanded Practice in the School of Art + Design. 鈥淲orking within limitations, and in unexpected ways, is a big part of the creative problem-solving process.鈥

The following are the available pre-college summer programs:

SESSION 1: June 8鈥19, 2020

 ART + DESIGN

 DANCE

 FILM

 THEATER

SESSION 2: June 15鈥19, 2020

  •  (featuring Intensives in Band, Piano, Singing and Voice, and String)

 SESSION 3: July 6鈥17, 2020

is currently open for pre-college programs.

The College of Fine Arts is also presenting a virtual summer arts youth camp for elementary and middle school students to learn alongside practicing artists to develop and realize their ideas, making unique works in a variety of media.

They will have the opportunity to sign up for one to two-week programs or free drop-in sessions with the Athens Community Music School Summer Music Week, Tantrum Kids Drama Class, as well as new programs in Art + Design.

鈥淎udio + Video Storytelling鈥 is just one of the many courses being offered through this virtual platform. Daniel King will co-lead the workshop that focuses on how audio and video, both on their own and combined, can be used as a device to connect us all.

We鈥檙e planning to engage with students in multiple ways, both all-together on short group video chat sessions, as well as through pre-recorded materials providing technical and creative inspiration,鈥 King said. 鈥淧articipants will be challenged to create both creative audio and video projects, to collaborate together online, and to make use of resources in their own homes/spaces in fun, creative ways.鈥

Students in this workshop will work with a variety of accessible tools to learn the skills to develop, record and complete podcasts, digital video content, and larger collaborative projects. Their individual ideas may be explored through formats as varied as interviews, script-writing, and visual effects to create final pieces ready for online streaming.

鈥淲e all can recognize that our world has moved online, and this summer will prove to test the resilience of kids and families to adjust, and respond in ways that are meaningful, personal, and human,鈥 King said. 鈥淵oung adults get most of their concepts and information about the world, themselves, and their communities through this shifted and expanded online world. Much of how we understand our world is through narrative and story. Through our camp, participants will become more aware of how stories are constructed, and to empower them to create their own audio-visual stories which have the power to bridge the social and physical distances between us.鈥
