Acclaimed journalists to present work at virtual Schuneman Symposium

Journalists who document stories dominating the world鈥檚 news will present their work at this year鈥檚 Schuneman Symposium on Photojournalism and New Media on March 30-31.

This year鈥檚 symposium will be virtual and feature stories about America鈥檚 20-year war in Afghanistan and Iraq, the 鈥渨ar on drugs鈥 in the Philippines, last summer鈥檚 protests in front of the White House and COVID-19.

鈥淭he focus of the 2021 Schuneman Symposium is covering global crises,鈥 said Eddith Dashiell, director of the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism. 鈥淲e have a diverse group of photojournalists and reporters who will share their stories of how they reported and documented crises from countries such as Iraq, Manila, France and Afghanistan. We believe our virtual symposium will provide an opportunity for a global conversation about covering global crises.鈥

Speakers include:

  • Freelance photojournalist Victor J. Blue, who received his master鈥檚 degree in visual communication from Ohio University and has completed assignments from 10 countries while earning seven Pictures of the Year International awards.
  • Craig Whitlock, national security reporter for The Washington Post, who has reported from more than 60 countries. He is the author of 鈥淭he Afghanistan Papers,鈥 which will be published as a book in the fall.
  • Freelance photojournalist Basilio Sepe, whose clients include five international news organizations and whose work is featured in the National Geographic documentary 鈥淭he Nightcrawlers.鈥
  • Freelance photojournalist Timothy Myers ACS, who has reported from four continents and whose work was honored with a Walkley Excellence in Journalism Award. The Walkleys honor the best in Australian journalism.
  • Freelance filmmaker Marcus Harun, a veteran of 10 newsrooms who has served as a breaking news script writer for most of the MSNBC network鈥檚 anchors. Harun鈥檚 day job is producing for MSNBC.
  • Freelance photojournalist Peter Turnley, whose work has been featured on 天美传媒week鈥檚 cover 40 times. He has worked in more than 90 countries, produced international exhibitions of his work and published eight books.

鈥淎fter a one-year hiatus due to COVID-19, the Schuneman Symposium on Photojournalism and New Media is back and we can鈥檛 be happier,鈥 said Timothy Goheen, director of the School of Visual Communication. 鈥淚 hope that everyone who can will take advantage and register for this free event. Speaking of that, a special thanks to both Smitty and Pat Schuneman for again making this amazing event possible.鈥

The symposium also includes screenings of two films. 鈥淭he Nightcrawlers鈥 is about Filipino President Rodrigo Duterte鈥檚 鈥渨ar on drugs鈥 that is estimated to have taken 20,000 lives. 鈥淓ssential Journalists鈥 is about how journalists adapted to cover COVID-19.

This 12th symposium is made possible through a generous gift from Ohio University alumni R. Smith and Patricia Schuneman. It is presented by the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism and the School of Visual Communication.

All programs will be presented via Zoom. Pre-registration is free, available and encouraged. To register and learn more about the speakers, go to /scripps-college/journalism/special-programs/schuneman-symposium/schuneman-symposium-2021.
